Presentation on theme: "Chemical Bonds (Covalent Models)"— Presentation transcript:

1 8.7-8.13 Chemical Bonds (Covalent Models)

2 8.7 The Covalent Bond: A MOdel
1. Strengths of the Bond Model: Associates quantities of energy with the formation of bonds between elements Allows the drawing of structures showing the spatial relationships between atoms in a molecule Provides a visual tool to understanding chemical structure

3 8.7 2. Weaknesses of the model
Bonds are not actual physical structures, but all models will show them in that form Bonds can not adequately explain some of the behavior of molecules that we observe

4 8.8 Covalent bond energies and chemical reactions

5 8.9 The localized Electron MOdel
3 assumptions are made with this model All structures can be accurately drawn/illustrated with a Lewis structure That a structure that we draw is an accurate prediction of the geometry of the molecule That we can accurately illustrate the effects of lone pairs on the shape/bending of a molecule

6 See notes/draw/practice/memorize
