3. Committee Recommendations
The District should take a “layered” approach to improving student and staff safety
No one thing will be “the answer.”

4. Committee Recommendations - Prevention
Increase counselor support
Seek further partnerships with mental health agencies
Improve all staff’s ability to recognize “ostracized” or “disconnected” students
Train all staff (bus drivers, cooks, janitors included) in how to develop proper relationships with students and help all students develop a meaningful connection with a staff member.
Improve student/family reporting capability
Emphasize- See something, say something
Utilize Crisis Text Line – Free, 24/7- confidential

5. Committee Recommendations - Preparedness
Continue to practice “realistic” scenarios with agency partners
Hire a full time (School Resource Officer) SRO
Protect and serve as a deterrent
Develop meaningful relationships with students
Assist in leading emergency preparedness/prevention
Improve staff’s ability to engage armed intruders by increasing non- lethal offensive tools available to staff.
Discussed use of “bean bag” shotgun propellant as an option.
Consider staff training and policies needed to put into place
Discussed the mindset of “educators” vs. “law enforcement” and the ability to act in a an active shooter incident

6. Committee Recommendations – Response
Staff need to be trained on the recognition of armed intruder incidents and how to respond appropriately
Train staff on “run, hide, fight” vs. traditional “lockdown” only
Improve on site capability to deal with trauma
Acknowledge that during an armed intruder incident EMS may not be able to assist immediately
