2 THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE
By Robert Louis Stevenson The main theme is the double: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are two sides of the same personality. The first one represents the respectable middle-class man, who lives according to the Victorian morality; the second one is the symbol of the instinctual side of every man, who comes out when we do not follow social rules. He was inspired by Charles Darwin’s new discoveries and by Doctor’s Knox story set in Edinburgh. The story is told from the point of view of Mr Utterson, a lawyer who wants to solve the mystery about a man called Hyde, known for his vices and crimes. Discovering that one of his friends, Dr Jekyll, is involved in the matter, Utterson becomes suspicious and decides to investigate.
