Photosynthesis
2
Photosynthetic organisms are producers …
Produce their own energy by harvesting sunlight The sunlight is converted into chemical energy in form of sugars (Food) Sugars are made through Photosynthesis….
3
Chloroplasts Chlorophyll Pigment in the Chloroplast
Found in the palisade mesophyll Converts light energy into Food Absorbs some of the visible light Visible light looks white, but has different colors: blue, red & green
4
Chlorophyll Plants have 2 types of chlorophyll
Chlorophyll a Chlorophyll b These 2 types of chlorophyll absorb RED and BLUE wavelength of light. Neither type absorbs green light. Plants are green because green light is reflected back into the environment… giving them a green appearance!
5
What is the role of Chlorophyll in Photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll a and b absorb the red and blue sunlight, harvesting the Energy for Photosynthesis
6
Chloroplasts Place of Photosynthesis (Sun energy -> Food)
7
Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are plant cell organelles.
Two main parts of chloroplasts are needed for photosynthesis: Granum (Plural: Grana) Stacks of compartments (Thylakoid) Thylakoids are stacked like coins Thylakoids contain chlorophyll a & b Stroma Fluid in chloroplast Grana float in stroma
8
2 stages of Photosynthesis
Light-dependent Sunlight is needed Light –independent No light is needed
9
Light – dependent reaction
Captures energy from the sunlight These reactions happen in the thylakoids
10
Light- dependent reaction
The sun energy is transferred to an energy molecule called ATP. During this process: water (H2O) are broken down oxygen (O2) are produced and Energy (ATP) is made 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2
11
Photosynthesis
12
Light- independent reaction
Uses the ATP (energy) from the light –dependent reaction to make sugars. The light-independent reaction (Calvin Cycle ) occurs in the Stroma. During this process: Carbon dioxide (CO2) & ATP are used to build sugar (C6H12O6) 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2
13
Photosynthesis 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2
