What did they do? Farmers usually sold their food for money to buy more land and grow more vegetables to feed his family The farmer's family works on the farm and all have different jobs to do Big colony owners own huge plantations with slaves working on them Photo from

Farming with Slavery People that mean a lot to the colony become very rich and they buy plantations from Native Americans in the area When slavery in America started in 1619, the people that owned the plantations thought that the slaves could work on the plantations This was before the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney,so they had to pick the cotton themselves Slaves thought they could escape, this started when Harriet Tubman escaped from a plantation in December in 1850 She continued to take slaves one by one to Pennsylvania Photo from

What did they eat? Did you know?
That it depended on what time of year it was that they had to eat certain foods What did they eat? In the spring, the Native Americans taught the farmer’s to hunt and grow crops In the summer, they ate bread,corn,barley,oats,and tobacco In the autumn, they ate beans,squash,peas,okra,pumpkins,peppers, peanuts,rice and potatoes In the winter, they ate whatever was left from what they ate in autumn This is okra Photo from
