WHAT TO EXPECT 1/3 Classroom, 2/3 Water.
You will learn about vision impairments (VI) and blindness. You will spend a bit of your time blindfolded, learning experientially. Jenn teaching Bill Finger (SE Region Coordinator) how to use the cane at a recent OuttaSight event

WHAT TO EXPECT We will walk through all aspects of OuttaSight event preparation, from trip planning to on-water safety. Following completion of this training, YOU will run a two- day OuttaSight/KAOS event! An OuttaSight paddle on a local lake or river is the best way to solidify your skills and build confidence in them.

Syllabus Three Tracks Track 1: Flat Water (lakes, inlets, sheltered bays) Track 2: Moving Water (Class 1 river, paddling in current) Track 3: White Water (Class 2 river, whitewater maneuvers) All tracks will be in class together in the mornings Each track will have its own customized on-water lesson plan

Time Activity 7:00-9:00 Breakfast, morning prep 9:00-9:30 Session Introduction 9:30-10:30 VI, Blindness Basics 10:30-11:30 Human Guide Basics 11:30-12:30 “Lightless Lunch” 12:30-1:30 Transport to Lake 1:30-5:00 On-Water intro to OuttaSight guiding principles and instructional techniques 5:00-6:00 Transport to Lodgings 6:00-6:30 Wrap-Up 7:00-? Dinner, etc. Day 1 All tracks are together all day A LOT of blind/VI simulation 3-4 hours on-water time

Time Activity 7:00-9:00 Breakfast, morning prep 9:00-10:00 TRR Safety Protocols 10:00-11:00 TRR Trip Leadership 11:00-11:30 Lunch 11:30-12:30 Track 1 & 2 Transport to Lake Track 3 Transport to River 12:30-5:00 Trip planning, Hazard mitigation, The Pod, Rescue, Flat Water Tripping Trip planning, Hazard mitigation, WW maneuvers, The Pod, Swimmer Rescue, Guiding 5:00-6:00 Transport to Lodgings 6:00-6:30 Wrap-Up 7:00-? Dinner, etc. Day 2 All tracks are together in the morning Tracks 1 and 2 go to the lake together Track 3 goes to an easy Park & Play whitewater feature

Time Activity 7:00-9:00 Breakfast, morning prep 9:00-10:00 Trip Planning 10:00-11:00 Transport to on-Water Location 11:00-12:00 Lunch on Location & Trip Briefing 12:00-5:00 Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 All tracks will run a trip from start to finish in the selected venue. Participants will take turns acting as the guide and then as the VI/Blind paddler. TRR will provide support and safety boaters as required. 5:00-6:00 Transport to Lodgings 6:00-? OGLP Endorsement Presentation Dinner and “Hoot-n-Nanny” Day 3 All tracks are together in the morning Tracks 1 goes to a large local lake Track 2 runs a local Class 1 river Track 3 runs a local Class 2 river

Days 4 & 5 Day 4 Newly-endorsed OGLP instructors will welcome new OuttaSight paddlers and KAOS families, teach basic skills, and prepare them for the next day’s on-water event. Day 5 Track 1 & 2 OGLP instructors will lead a trip on a large local lake. Track 3 OGLP instructors will lead a trip on a local Class I river.
