1 The Syrians, who were not Jews, had destroyed the Jewish temple because they wanted the Jews to worship their god Zeus.To stop the Jews worshipping at their own temple, the Syrians had put their own statues of Zeus there, killed pigs inside the temple and forbidden the Jews to enter. Each of the four letters mean something. N (Nun) means ‘nothing’ so you do nothing. G (Gimmel) means ‘everything’ so you get everything in the pot.
