I am so excited to introduce today's artist, who comes all the way from Japan! So today’s Japanese words mean “hello” and “thank you”! In a count of three lets say kohnichiwa! Konichiwa is hello and is always accompanied with a bow for respect. Turn to your neighbor and say konnichiwa! Don’t forget to bow. To say thank you in Japanese is Arigato. Let’s say arigato!

3. Hayao Miyazaki January 5, 1941 Japan
Say Konichiwa to Hayao Miyazaki! Miyazaki was born in 1941 in Japan. He grew up in a wealthy family. His dad was the director of an airplane company. Now you may think that growing up rich would be a fun and easy childhood, but that was not the case for Miayazaki. Miyazaki grew up in the middle of World War II, so him and his family were constantly living in fear of bombings and raids.

After the war ended, he was middle-school-aged and found a cool new form of art called “Manga”, which is Japanese for “cartoon.” He really wanted to become a manga artist when he grew up, but he felt he wasn’t good at drawing people, so he only drew planes, tanks, and battleships for several years. Can anyone tell me why he would be good at drawing planes, tanks, and battleships? (call on volunteers) Yes, because of his father’s occupation in the airplane company, he was constantly surrounded by airplanes. Also growing up in the war he saw a lot of tanks and battle ships.

5. When he was 22 years old, his dreams came true and he became an animator for an animation company. He worked for many different animation companies for over 20 years, doing all aspects of animations. But something was missing. He was ready for the next part of his dream to make his own visions and ideas come to life. At the age of 44, he opened his own animation studio – Studio Ghibli. The pictures you see around Miyasaki are some of his most memorable characters. Let’s meet one of his most famous characters!

6. Does anyone know who the big grey character is. Meet Totoro
Does anyone know who the big grey character is? Meet Totoro! He is from the movie “My Neighbor Totoro.” Miyazaki always drew and told stories that related to his childhood, so this movie takes place in Japan after the war. Miyazaki designs most of the characters he creates, including Totoro!

7. Totoro is a combination of an owl, a racoon and a bear
Totoro is a combination of an owl, a racoon and a bear. Can you see those influences in Miyazaki’s design.

8. Another one of Miyazaki’s films is called “Spirited Away”
Another one of Miyazaki’s films is called “Spirited Away”. This movie was written, directed and even storyboarded and drawn by Miyazaki himself. An interesting fact about Miyazaki is that he never writes a script for his animations. He always starts with drawing small story boards and lets the story unfold itself through the drawings. Spirited Away is the highest grossing movie from Japan.

9. He made many other films for another 20 years with Studio Ghibli that won awards and the hearts of children all around the world. But now, he partnered with another group of dreamers for his next films. Can you guys tell from this movie poster who he’s partnered up with? (call on volunteer) You’re right, Disney! Disney acquired Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli back in 2000, and now they are bringing Miyazaki’s world to life again. Their first partnership was the movie “Ponyo”, which is about a magical fish princess who falls in love with a human boy.

10. Miyazaki’s inspiration on Ponyo are the “Little Mermaid” and a children’s story about a frog. He took the design of a goldfish as his final look for Ponyo!
