You’re Growing Up How do you feel today?
3
When talking about bodies, people may feel…
4
Why do we need to talk about this?!
Some students wonder… Why do we need to talk about this?! What do you think? Sometimes students wonder, “Why do we need to talk about this?” That’s a very good question. Can anyone think of a reason why we take the time to talk about puberty? Responses usually include, “To be more prepared”, “To know what to expect”, “To get correct information and answers to questions.”
5
What is “Puberty”? A. The medical name for the process of changing from a child to an adult. B. The period of life during which an individual becomes capable of reproduction. C. Puberty comes from the Latin word “pubescere” which means “to be covered with hair.” D. PEW-burr-tee is a time when young people start to smell, causing others to plug their nose and say, “PEW!” Indicate that answers A, B and C are all correct and that D, while put in for humor, can be true and will be addressed later on in the lesson.
6
When Does Puberty Happen?
9 11 17 16 10 15 18 12 13 8 14 Ask: When does puberty happen? After guesses, advance to next slide and determine that puberty happens anywhere between 8 & 18.
7
Puberty can happen anytime between
9 to 15! Stress that there is no “right time” to experience the changes of puberty since all bodies change at their own speed.
8
Hormones Hormones are chemicals that control certain body processes.
Testosterone is a hormone that causes body changes to occur in boys. We have something in our brain called the Hypothalamus, which acts as a switch in the brain and sends a message to the pituitary gland, which is also in the brain, to release a hormone called growth hormone. It boys it is called testosterone. It takes as long as 4 years for all the changes to take place, and it is important to remember that you are unique and you all have your very own time clock which is different from your friend’s.
9
Stages of Development Puberty usually begins between ages 9-15
Increase in height Shoulders broaden Muscle mass increases Voice changes Growth of body hair
10
Stages of Development Appearance of facial hair Breast buds
Reproductive organs increase in size Production of sperm Mood swings
11
Height Different parts of the body grow at different rates
Hands and feet reach full size first Legs, arms and trunk are growing too. (Scoliosis checks important) Be patient with yourself, individuals grow at different rates You’re going to have an adult body soon
12
Scoliosis Screening Scoliosis-side to side curvature of the spine
Utah law mandates that screenings are to be done Scoliosis is an unnatural sideways curvature of the spine that develops during adolescence because you are growing so fast and sometimes the spine can grow crooked. Scoliosis is easy to check for, and if treated early it can prevent a lot of problems. It tends to run in families. It is more common in girls than boys. Utah state law requires scoliosis screening beginning in the 5th grade and ending in the 9th grade. 12
16
Body changes The hormone testosterone causes the shoulders to broaden and muscles to increase. Do not use anabolic steroids Work out to make muscles stronger.
17
Voice Changes The voice box is growing.
The vocal cords become longer and thicker. Voice cracks and squeaks but it is only temporary! Once your vocal chords stop growing your voice will be deep sounding.
18
Body Hair Hair grows over the pubic area Hair grows under the armpits
Hair on arms and legs grows thicker and darker Facial hair starts to grow (age 14-16) Grows on upper lip first Talk to you parents before you start to shave. Be careful that you don’t cut your self and end up with a scare.
19
Oil and Sweat Glands New glands producing oil and sweat
About the same time as underarm hair Need to use good personal hygiene habits Zits or acne are the Pits.. Keep your skin clean, try over the counter products……if serious see your doctor Never scratch or touch your pimples Can cause an infection or scars 19
20
Healthy Body Take a shower or bath every day Use deodorant
Brush/floss Teeth Shampoo hair Keep your feet clean and dry Get plenty of rest 20
21
Mood Swings Feel topsy-turvy, you feel very happy and then suddenly, not feel so happy Hormones affect the emotions Knowing what to expect will help you cope Ask for help and information Seek professional help 21
22
Using Correct Terms Help Us:
show respect for self and others recognize that we don’t need to feel ashamed of our bodies communicate questions and concerns to parents and medical care providers.
23
Get The Picture? A. I took two of those and placed them in the thing. I pushed the small thing down and waited a minute. They popped up and I put them on that. I spread some of this on them. Then I ate them. B. I took two pieces of bread and placed them in the toaster. I pushed down the knob and waited one minute. The bread popped up and I put it on a plate. I spread some jelly on the toasted bread. Then I ate the toast. Instruct the participants to follow along as you read paragraphs A and B. Tell them that afterward you will ask them to determine which one they understood better. Why was paragraph B easier to understand? (Answers usually include, the second paragraph because it uses the names of the items, it’s more descriptive, you know what they are referring to, etc.)
24
We are here as a result of 2 cells
Sperm cell Egg cell State: We are all here because of two cells. A sperm cell and an egg cell. They are both very tiny. Remind participants about one of the definitions of “puberty”: The period of life during which an individual becomes capable of reproduction. We just discovered that boys and girls experience similar changes during puberty. There are also changes that are different. Some of these changes allow eggs to be released by a girl’s body and sperm to be made in a boy’s body. Let’s look at these changes now. Reinforce that it’s normal to feel uncomfortable or giggly, as well as curious.
25
During puberty, a male’s (boy’s) brain sends signals to his testicles to begin making hormones. These hormones tell the body to start the changes that will result in an adult body capable of reproduction (or being able to have a baby/get a female pregnant.) Most boys have some soreness around their nipples during puberty. This tenderness is caused by hormones and will go away on its own. Many boys also have some breast growth during puberty—a thickening under the nipple—which is normal and usually goes away in a year or so. Some boys wear an undershirt during this time which can give them an extra layer for privacy.
26
Male Reproductive System
When a boy reaches puberty, he will start to produce sperm for the first time. Sperm are produced in the testicles. When sperm leave the body, they combine with fluid from the seminal vesicle and prostate gland in a fluid called semen.
27
Testicle: Once a boy reaches a certain point in puberty, it is in the testicles that millions of very small sperm cells are produced every day. The sperm contain genetic information from the male. Testicles also produce hormones like testosterone.
28
Seminal Vesicles: The two seminal vesicles located near the bladder produce fluids in which sperm move and are nourished.
29
Prostate Gland: Produces additional fluid which nourishes the sperm.
Semen: The combination of fluids and sperm which produces a sticky, white milky fluid.
30
Epididymis: The tube where sperm are stored and mature
Epididymis: The tube where sperm are stored and mature. It is tightly coiled on top of, and behind, each testicle.
31
Vas Deferens: A long, narrow tube that carries sperm from each epidiymis to the seminal vesicles.
32
Bladder: Where urine is stored
Bladder: Where urine is stored. It is not part of the reproductive system, but urine leaves the body through the urethra which is also how semen leaves the body. Urine and semen never leave a males body at the same time.
33
Urethra: A narrow tube inside the penis that carries fluids (semen and urine) out of the body.
34
A penis is made up of spongy tissue. There is no bone in the penis.
35
Erection The penis fills with blood and becomes hard.
Involuntary erections happen during puberty. It is normal. Erections are not as noticeable as you think. It will go away of its own accord.
36
Ejaculation The passage of semen from the penis.
Does not contain any urine. Nocturnal emissions are a normal part of growing up.

38
Reproductive Organs Reproductive organs increase in size.
Athletic support necessary for some activities Protective cup provides protection. Sold in sporting goods stores/drug stores Launder them often to prevent infection Your testicles are very SENSITIVE so it is important to be careful when you are playing sports so that you don’t get kicked on them and get hurt. You SHOULD NEVER KICK YOUR FRIENDS OR ANYONE ELSE ON THE TESTICLES, this is not funny, a game or a joke because it is very painful and it may cause damage.
39
Athletic Supporter Jockstraps
Keeps the testes and penis close to the body so they don’t move.
40
Protective Cup Placed in the athletic supporter for protection.
Use when playing baseball, football, and hockey
