1 Tropical Cyclone Structure-2008 (TCS-08) ONR/NRL Funded Projects
Project Title and Principal Investigator(s) Background Scientific Objectives Field Experiment Requirements Tropical Cyclone Structure-2008 (TCS-08) ONR/NRL Funded Projects Interactions between convective clusters and evolving synoptic-scale disturbances govern TC formation. Disturbances include Rossby wave dispersion, synoptic-scale wave trains, easterly waves, upper-level troughs. Using NOGAPS Singular Vectors to diagnose large-scale influences on tropical cyclogenesis Sharanya J. Majumdar , University of Miami Melinda Peng & Carolyn Reynolds, NRL Monterey Relative sensitivity of developing TC to these synoptic-scale processes on a case-by-case basis is unclear. To provide real-time NOGAPS Singular Vector sensitivity guidance during TCS-08. To diagnose the dynamical characteristics of NOGAPS SVs and the relation between perturbation growth and tropical cyclone formation. To assess the ability of NOGAPS SVs to capture the change to forecasts based on the assimilation of adaptive observations and to provide guidance for NOGAPS future improvement. Synoptic-scale data that best complement other data collected during the experiment for hypothesis testing by other TCS-08 PIs. In particular, dropwindsondes released by driftsonde balloons in sensitive areas, and multiple aircraft data.
