Figure 1 Cytoprotection by EPO. Endogenous kidney cells are protected by EPO. The beneficial effect is mediated by the tissue-protective receptor composed of EpoR and βcR. The canonical receptor of a homodimer of EpoR may also be involved in tissue protection. Klotho, another important factor produced by the kidney, increases expression of EpoR and enforces tissue protection.
