1 Goals for Learning in the Geosciences
We are seeking the goals that are common and essential to learning about the geosciences at all levels including Content Skills Process (what does one need to do an extended project) Attitudes These goals need to be stated in a fashion that supports The educator The learner Assessment Research agenda

2 A Transformation We celebrate the attitudes and understanding that students bring to learning and seek to transform their expectations of what they will learn, their understanding of how geoscientists think, and their view of the power and role of science and its limitations.

3 Developing Scientific Capability
Thinking like a geoscientist includes understanding the nature and process of science the roles of evidence and theory

4 Thinking Like a Geoscientist
How to use observations of nature to infer the past Work in the field, observing natural experiments How to create and use complex, multi-step models How to draw rational conclusions from incomplete data Understanding time including rates, scales, and the relationship between the current state and the time integrated history Multi-dimensional representation of data Map understanding, 3-d visualization Quantitative skills??? Goals vary for different audiences

5 Special Opportunities
Teaching science in a relevant context Bringing science together with social issues Providing a context for the use of geoscience and other science thinking Integration of the science curriculum/synergistic roles for the disciplines. Can integrate professional research into education because r esearch questions are accessible to high school/undergraduate students
