Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) What kind of parent do you hope to be one day? 2.) How can you compare and contrast Troy’s and Rose’s parenting styles? *Show owed HW. Thursday, April 4th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Act 1, Scene 4 of August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now B.) Read-Aloud: Finish reading Act 1, Scene 4—pp (roles: Troy, Rose, Cory, Bono, Lyons, Gabriel and Stage Directions). Take notes on textual evidence of the characters experiencing fences (divisions/barriers) and pursuing the American Dream. How can you describe Troy’s childhood? How do you think Troy’s childhood affects his parenting style? How can you describe Troy’s relationship with Cory? Why is there a fence between Troy and Cory and how can the barrier be broken? D.) Reflections: What were your first impressions of Act 1, Scene 4? What can you predict will happen next?
