4. .Question- How does dye effect the color of a white carnation? Purpose- to find out how dye effects the color of a white carnation Hypothesis- 1. I believe the food coloring should penetrate the stem of the white carnation and change the white carnation to that color. 2. The carnation with red food coloring will show the most color in two days followed by the blue, green, purple, and the least color will be seen on the orange carnation. Materials- 1. five vases 2. measuring cup 3. one spoon 4. one pair of scissors 5. one package of food coloring 6. carnations for each vase Procedure- 1. Gather and set up all materials. 2. Fill the vases with water. 3. Add drops of food coloring to each container of water. 4. Mix the water and food coloring together with a spoon. 5. Chart observations from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening.

6. Conclusion- In my hypothesis, I stated that the red would be the first color to show the most color, blue would be second, green would be third, purple would be fourth, and orange would be fifth. On Tuesday, June 4, 2002, I checked the flowers to see if my hypothesis was correct. I was correct about the red, blue, and green flowers. I was incorrect about the purple and orange flowers. The orange was fourth and the purple flower was last. In the future, I would change the colors purple and orange because they did not do very well. I would use watermelon red and teal as my new colors.
