10 The Matriarch Only women in Scripture given their age at death
Described as sharp, devoted, generous, harsh and fiercely committed to her family Women and men are told to look at Sarah as an example Interesting no where in scripture are we told to look at/to Mary In fact, Sarah is mentioned more times in Scripture than any other woman, even Mary the mother of Jesus “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

12 This IS for US too Isaiah 51 “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness     and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut     and to the quarry from which you were hewn; 2 look to Abraham, your father,     and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man,     and I blessed him and made him many. Attributes of Abraham Obedience Man of Faith Man of worship Man of prayer Man who communed with God Romans 4 4 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[a] 4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. 6 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those     whose transgressions are forgiven,     whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the one     whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”[b] “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

13 The Way of Life 1 Peter, 3 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 1 Peter 2 :11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. He flows into chapt 3  “GENTLE” does not mean passive, weak, or someone who cannot help herself. Rather, it means “controlled strength.” Picture a mother cradling a newborn. She has the physical strength to harm that child but doesn’t because her strength is under control. A gentle woman has a humble heart that bows itself before God, recognizes God’s dealings with her as good, and chooses not to be contentious or resistant against Him. “QUIET” does not mean whisper, silent, or bland. Rather, it means “tranquility arising from within” and includes the idea of causing no disturbance to others. It is an inner peace and calmness in the midst of any circumstances. Gentleness and peace are fruits of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5: 22-23) in a believer’s life and, thus, available to every Christian woman who desires them. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

14 Behind Every Great Man There is a Great Woman Follows Submits Supports
Encourages Believes She left the land of Ur She had wonderful city to live in She everything that was available at that time She followed him into a wandering in the wilderness lifestyle Not once but twice she lies for her man He did not have to spend time in the hands of another man “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

15 Sarah’s Legacy A woman of Faith She is the mother of the Promise
She honored her husband She honored her relationship with God Hebrews 11:13-16  13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Sarah’s life on the whole is actually characterized by humility, meekness, hospitality, faithfulness, deep affection for her husband, sincere love toward God, and hope that never died. She raised her boy right – knowing he was the promise “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

16 The Process 3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said, 4 “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.” All of that is going through Abraham’s spirit as he bargains now KJV -  I am a foreigner and a sojourner among you: Abraham did not feel this way because he came from Ur of the Chaldeans. It was because he recognized his real home was heaven. According to scripture Moses knew the same, and commanded Israel to know it. David also knew this truth This way of negotiating the price is typical of ancient and modern practices in that culture. As a gesture of kindness, the selling party may offer to give the property in question to the buyer, until the buyer insists on paying a price. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

17  According to Genesis 10, they were the descendants of Heth, son of Canaan, who was the son of Ham, born of Noah Ruled about 1700 to 1200 bc “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

18 5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6 “Sir, listen to us
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6 “Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.” “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

19 7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8 He said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.” Abraham shows how a Christian should do business with the world: courteously, fairly, prudently. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

20 10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. 11 “No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.” The Canaanite, Ephron, follows the cultural customs of bargaining. First, the seller offers to give the item. Then, when that is refused, the seller suggests a price, which he claims is modest but is really very high. This is understood to be the starting point, and from there the bargaining begins. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

21 12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.” “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

22 14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” Starting High Abraham does not bargain He accepts “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

23 The Deal is Done 16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants. 111 oz of silver Today “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

24 17 So Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre—both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field— was deeded18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. But God had already given him all of this land “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

25 Closure - Remembering 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.  This is where Isaac and Ishmael buried Abraham. Isaac and Rebekah were both buried here. Jacob buried Leah here, and Joseph buried Jacob here. And this was the place Joseph told his descendants to bury him, taking his bones with them when they came into the Promised Land. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”
