12 a. Stephen F. Austin – was an American empresario (real estate agent for Mexico to get settlers into Texas) who led the first successful colony in Texas. They settled by the Colorado River. They were first three hundred American families in Texas. Their success attracted other settlers into Texas. Santa Anna – was the president of Mexico. Became a dictator and suspended the Mexican constitution. He sent troops to Texas to take away their weapons, which made Texans rebel. He lost the battle of San Jacinto where he was captured and forced to sign a treaty giving Texas its independence. 12 b. Settlers in Texas rebel against Mexican rule because Santa Anna broke his promise of allowing Texas to be more independent, he tried to take away their weapons, and his government banned slavery and new American settlements in Texas. 12c. Texas and the U.S. independence were similar because they both wanted to break away from their existing rulers laws and have a chance at self-government, both Santa Anna and King George were a long way from
