Students will be able to identify and describe different types of mixtures.

4. Connection
Since we have discussed that all things are made of atoms, and how atoms can combine to form molecules or compounds, we are now going to talk about what happens when different molecules mix together.
When this happens, we get mixtures!

6. What is a mixture?
A substance made by mixing other substances together that are not chemically combined, only physically combined
The substances in a mixture can be separated using physical methods such as filtration, freezing, and distillation.

7. Types of Mixtures
Homogeneous Mixtures are uniform throughout, or have a consistent appearance.
These are also known as solutions, when one substance has dissolved in another.
Examples: salt water, Kool-Aid, air, and metal alloys such as bronze and steel

8. Types of Mixtures
Heterogeneous Mixtures are not uniform throughout and you can see the different parts.
These types of mixtures can be known as colloids and suspensions.
Examples: Trail mix, salad, cinnamon- sugar, chicken noodle soup

Define what a mixture is and explain the difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.
In your house, find 3 homogeneous mixtures and 3 heterogeneous mixtures. Write them down and explain how you know which mixture is which type. Be prepared to share with the class tomorrow.
