1 The stages of fertilisation in a flowering plant

2 Structures in a flower Stigma – the female part of a flower where pollen grains land Anther – the male part of the flower that contains pollen grains, the male gamete Style – the female part of a flower that connects the stigma to the ovary Ovary – the female part of the flower that contains the female gametes, the ovules Ovule – the female sex cell Filament – the male part of the flower that holds up the anthers

3 The stages of pollination
A pollen grain from the same or a different flower, lands on the stigma.

4 The stages of pollination
The pollen grain on the stigma stimulates a pollen tube to start forming. The pollen tube grows down the style. The pollen grain nucleus travels down the pollen tube.

5 The stages of pollination
The pollen tube continues to grown until it reaches the ovary. The pollen tube grows into the ovary and fuses with an ovule The male gamete nucleus fuses with the female gamete (ovary). This results in fertilisation of the flower.
