John Adams

*John Adams was running for re-election (2nd term)

3. Bitter Election: 1800 Adams, Jefferson and running mate Burr
Electoral College:
Jefferson got 73 votes
Burr (the running mate) got 73 votes
Vote went to the House of Representatives
On 36 ballot – voted for Jefferson with Hamilton’s help
To prevent this, the 12th Amendment was passed  candidate ran on a ticket

Aaron Burr becomes his vice president
John Adams bitterly loses and only serves 1 term as President
