4 Health Regions and Peer Groups

5 Some health geography resources
Searching by postal code or place name in the 2011 census profile. Looking around Health Regions: Boundaries and Correspondence with Census Geography page (important: after selecting the most recent date, click on “table of contents".

Files compatible with GIS software Linkages between health geography and census geography (good luck!!!) Beautiful PDF maps

10 Peer Groups

11 Health Indicators "Over 80 indicators measure the health of the Canadian population and the effectiveness of the health care system. Designed to provide comparable information at the health region and provincial/territorial levels (…)" Access the indicators: By going to the most recent release date on the health indicator's page, clicking on "Table of contents" and then selecting "Data tables and definitions". Quick groupings of indicators: CIHI's Health Indicators Interactive Tool. Stat Can data table of health characteristics by health regions. Stat Can data table of population estimates by health regions. CD CSD DA DB CT CMA HR FSA PC R/U

13 Health Indicators Most recent health indicators grouped by theme.
The "newer" indicators are identified with a "1". When given options between different tables within a given indicator, be aware that data might be from different years. When looking at an interactive data table, check the footnotes to make sure that you have the most recent version available.

14 CIHI Grouping of Health Indicators
It's a trap! Sometimes a trap! So is this! If CIHI says that there is no data for your chosen indicator(s), try selecting more than one level of geography (i.e. Newfoundland and Labrador + associated health regions), grab all the years, and make sure to click on "Both" for Sex even if you want subcategories.

15 Stat Can Data Table Grouping of Health Indicators
Review Stat Can data table slides: remember to look at "Add/Remove data". See Stat Can data table for 2007 to 2014.

16 Population Estimates

17 Flavors of Health Stats (Health Stats for specific populations)

18 Working with your population
Finding data about a specific population can be tricky. Finding health data on a specific population can be even trickier. Specific age groups: find demographic data in the census data tables. Look for health indicators with an "age group" variable (table is an example). Children under 12: the Canadian Community Health Survey does not cover children under 12, and does not cover children living in foster care. Try searching for health data in grey literature.

19 Working with your population
Indigenous identity: there are differences in data collection on-reserve and off- reserve. Try a "Aboriginal peoples" subject search in Stat Can. Try health indicator table and health variables in the Aboriginal Peoples Survey. LGBTQ+: sexual orientation variables are not often included in Stat Can surveys. Find Stat Can data about family structures by searching for "same sex" data tables (recent censuses only). Explore resources shared in the LGBTQ+ Health subject guide. Try a grey literature search.
