Judicial Branch The Supreme Court

Judicial Branch This branch of gov’t is composed of the Supreme Court and the Federal Court System. The Judicial Branch is at times the strongest of the 3 branches, no one can over turn their decisions but themselves.

Supreme Court The Supreme Court is composed of 9 Justices (judges) who write opinions of the court. One of the 9 Justices serves as the Chief Justice of the Court.

Supreme Court

9 Justices

Justice Sonia Sotomayor

The Justices The Justices are picked by the President, and must be approved by a majority vote in the Senate. If approved, they serve for life (like a king), no politics of re-elections.

What do they do? The Supreme Court is a appeals court, not like you see on tv or in regular court. They listen to 1 hour speeches and decide if the earlier decisions were Constitutional or not from the lower courts.

Supreme Court The Court decides if our Constitutional rights were violated by actions of Congress, President, or lower courts. No one can change their decisions! No one can do anything to them for their decisions! Not even the Prez.

Supreme Court The Court is so busy they can only hear less than 1 percent of the cases sent to them. Very hard process to get to the Court (lots of $ and time). They only hear the important decisions that affect us and society.

Supreme Court They listen to speeches from both sides of the case for a hour. Then they meet together and discuss the case and vote. A 5 vote majority is needed for a decision which then becomes law.
