Standard 1 - The Chemistry of Life
Chemical elements form organic molecules that interact to perform the basic functions of life. Do not write this down
2
Focus areas Teacher expectations: Students will be able to:
Know and state the organization of life from atoms to organisms. Describe the structure of the atom. Know the 6 primary elements of life. Know what the acronym CHONPS stands for and the role of that these play in the biological molecules of living matter. (Carbon, Hydrogen ,Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Sulfur) Know the relative abundance of each. Know the importance of water in the cell and why all life is based on water as the solvent of living chemicals. Know the 4 major components molecules of life and what there monomer and polymer forms are. Be able to distinguish them in a picture. Know the role each plays in the cell. Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids Nucleic Acids Look at the following objectives above. Your job is to read the slides and take notes on the bulleted expectations. Slides with red titles are ones that give notes.
3
The organization of life
Q
4
An atom is the smallest unit of matter with identifiable properties.
Q
5
A molecule is the smallest particle in a compound that has the chemical properties of that compound. Molecules are made up of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds Q
6
Tissues Q Organs, organ systems and you Cells
7
The state wants you to know
Strand 1.1 Recognize that biological organisms are composed primarily of very few elements. The six most common are C, H, N, O, P, and S. Strand 1.2 Describe the basic molecular structures and primary functions of the four major categories of organic molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids). Do not write this down
8
The Elements of life These are called the CHNOPS elements; the letters stand for the chemical abbreviations of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur. 59% Hydrogen (H) 24% Oxygen (O) 11% Carbon (C) 4% Nitrogen (N) 2% Others - Phosphorus (P), Sulphur (S), etc. Q
9
Most abundant compound
Water is the most abundant molecule in a cell and in the body. Approximately 70 percent of a cell's mass is composed of water molecules. The composition of the rest of the cell is organic molecules and inorganic ions. Q

Q Cool Stuff about the most important element to Life
12
The basic molecules of life
Q

Carbohydrates https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeOUIXbFyqk
Q Carbohydrates
14
Monosaccharides Polysaccharides
These are found in fruits, milk and seeds as energy. It is usually a disaccharide in its natural form. Polysaccharides Plant fiber like stalks and bark Potato's

Proteins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUMJwjLXh1M
Q Proteins
16
The side groups are the same n all. The R group differentiates them.
Amino acid structure There are 22 types of amino acids. They combine to form structures in the cell, body and act as regulatory molecules. They also act as motors or transport molecules throughout the cell The side groups are the same n all. The R group differentiates them.
17
Lipids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BBYBRWzsLA
Q Lipids
18
Lipids came in long chains of CH
Lipids came in long chains of CH. They are commonly used to store energy in a cell in the form of triglycerides and waxes. They also act as cell membrane in the form of a phospholipid.
19
Nucleic acids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXdzuz5Q-hs
20
Nucleotide monomer polymer
DNA and RNA are the instruction code to the cell.

Here are alternative videos for these topics
What are Carbohydrates? What are Fats? What are proteins? What are Nucleic Acids?
