The Baby BOOM End to war and end to the Great Depression meant:
Soldiers were quick to marry and have children upon their return 1 baby every 7 seconds These babies would grow up to buy all sorts of goods and make the economy grow Any down sides?

Truman Wins! 1948- Truman ran for election against Thomas Dewey of N; heavily expected to lose However, Truman wins! Truman had supported civil rights, which had divided his Democratic Party Dixiecrats—southern Democrats formed this anti-civil rights party to run against Truman

The Fair Deal Truman tried to institute the Fair Deal:
Strengthen New Deal policies and add national health insurance NOT passed by Congress Truman failed with Congress and was in an unpopular war…he would not run for re-election

Conservative; wanted less govt involvement BUT did NOT undo New Deal programs

Middle/upper classes move the suburbs Levittowns become popular Cheap houses built using same model Housing shortage in the cities

Shopping centers, cinemas, etc all built in/ near suburbs Fast food, drive-ins were all increasing Diminished need for residents to travel into the city The “car culture” allowed these people to get to and fro with relative ease Car ownership 24 million in 1945 60 million in 1960

Eisenhower’s Interstate System
Interstate Highway Act of 1956 Authorized funds to build an interstate highway system Boosts travel/tourism to new cities Federal-Aid Highway Act of The bill created a 41,000-mile “National System of Interstate and Defense Highways” that would, according to Eisenhower, eliminate unsafe roads, inefficient routes, traffic jams and all of the other things that got in the way of “speedy, safe transcontinental travel.” At the same time, highway advocates argued, “in case of atomic attack on our key cities, the road net [would] permit quick evacuation of target areas.”
