UNIT 8 ANIMALS

Animals are diverse but share common characteristics

Animals are the most diverse kingdom -belong to DOMAIN Eukarya -range in size from 25 m to microscopic -found nearly everywhere on Earth

Animals share a set of characteristics -cells supported by collagen -reproduce sexually

More than 95% of all animal species are invertebrates

Each animal phylum has a unique body plan -Vertebrates= internal segmented backbone -Invertebrates= no backbone

Animals grouped by using a variety of criteria 3 criteria used -body plan symmetry -tissue layer -developmental patterns

Symmetry a. Radial- body arranged in a circle around a central disks

Symmetry b. Bilateral- divides body into equal halves along one plane

2. Tissue layers Radial have 2 layers ectoderm- outside endoderm- inside

Bilateral have 3 layers ectoderm- outside endoderm- inside mesoderm- middle

Meaning: ectoderm- outside -skin and nervous system endoderm- inside -lines gut mesoderm- middle -internal organs and tissues

3. Developmental patterns Protostomes- mouth forms from the blastophore, anus forms second -gut cavity formed from separation of mesoderm -spiral cleavage Deuterostomes- anus forms first and the mouth second -gut cavity formed from pouches -radial cleavage

Animal Tissues Lack Tissues- sponges 2 Tissues- jellyfish & corals 3 Tissues a. Protostomes- flatworms, annelids, mollusks, roundworms, arthropods b. Deuterostomes- echinoderms, chordates Technology will be helping with relationships.

Porifera Cnidaria Platyhelminthes Annelida Mollusca Nematoda
Arthropoda Echinodermata Chordata RADIAL NO TISSUES PROTOSTOMES DUETEROSTOMES
