What happened ? On the 23rd ofAugust 2005 Katrina formed over the Bahamas. It then came across southern Florida and caused lots of death and flooding. It strengthened across the Gulf of Mexico. However, out at sea Katrina weakened into a stormand hit land again in Lousiana on 29th August. Despite being weaker it actually caused a lot more damage because of the storm surge- or a huge flood bringing the sea onto land during high winds. Tragically the storm surge broke through damns and caused severe flooding and most deaths in this disaster. Unbelievably as much as 80% of New Orleans was flooded. There is around $81 billion of damage.
