The Assembly vs. the Church
In 1790 In order to meet the government debt the National Assembly took and sold church property. This of Course did not Please the Pope who, with the Catholic Church became an enemy of the Revolution

The Constitution of 1791 In 1791 the National Assembly presented a constitution to France It imitated the English System and… Limited the power of the King Created a Unicameral legislature Declared Equal Rights Allow all adult males who paid a minimum tax to vote

Political Unrest The 1791 Constitution pleased the Moderates but not the Radicals that wished to end the monarchy nor Reactionaries that wanted the old system restored National Assembly was bitterly divided… On the Right…Reactionaries On the Left…. Radical Revolutionaries In the Center…Moderates

Social Unrest The New Government was not up to the task of bringing order to the country Chaos grew… Monarchs in Austria and Germany were pressed by escaped French Nobles to Restore the King to Power The King decided to escape to Austria, was discovered and arrested Paris Mobs commit the “September Masscares’ Killing Nobles and Priests

WAR! Feeling betrayed by the King the people mostly backed the “Republic” August 1792 Fearful of attack the “Republic” declared war on Austria September 1792 Austria and Prussia attack. Rallied by Georges-Jacques Danton the French throw together an army and… Win the Battle of Valmy.

The Execution of Louis A National Convention wrote a Democratic Constitution during It also… Made a new calendar with Sept 22, 1792 as day one (the day the Republic was created) Accused the King of conspiring with France’s Enemies (Austria etc.) and Executed him and Wife by guillotine.
