Lesson Objective: You will be able to identify the four chambers of the heart and compare the functions of the veins, arteries, and capillaries.
2
The Circulatory System:
Delivers nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body. Consists of the heart and the blood vessels.
3
What do you think is the most important organ in the Circulatory System?
4
The Heart: Organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
Contains four “chambers”: 1. The Right Atrium 2. The Right Ventricle 3. The Left Atrium 4. The Left Ventricle
5
The Four Chambers of the Heart:
Blood enters both the Right Atrium and the Left Atrium. The Heart beats and the blood flows into the Right Ventricle and Left Ventricle. The Heart beats and the blood flows either to the Lungs or out into the body.
7
The Right Chambers: The Right Atrium receives blood low in oxygen and sends it to the Right Ventricle. The Right Ventricle pumps the blood low in oxygen to the lungs. The lungs give the blood oxygen.
8
The Left Chambers: The Left Atrium receives blood high in oxygen and sends it to the Left Ventricle. The Left Atrium pumps the blood high in oxygen into the body. The blood travels throughout the body.
10
How many chambers of the Heart are there? A – 2 B – 3 C – 4 D – 5
11
The right chambers receive blood ____ in oxygen, while the left chambers receive blood _____ in oxygen. A – High, Low B – Low, High C – High, High D – Low, Low
12
Once the blood goes through the Right Atrium, it goes to the – A – Left Atrium B – Lungs C – Right Ventricle D – Body
13
Once the blood has gone through the Right Atrium and the Right Ventricle it goes to the – A – Body B – Lungs C – Left Atrium D – Left Ventricle
14
Once the blood has gone through the Left Atrium and the Left Ventricle it goes to the – A – Body B – Right Ventricle C – Lungs D – Right Atrium
15
How does the blood actually travel through the body?
16
Blood Vessels: There are three main types of blood vessels:
1. Arteries 2. Capillaries 3. Veins
18
Arteries, Capillaries, and Veins:
Arteries take blood away from the from the heart to the organs and tissues. Capillaries are a network of tiny vessels that take blood through the organs and tissues. Veins collect blood from the capillaries and send it back to the heart for more oxygen.
19
Organs use up the oxygen in the blood so it must be sent back to the Right Chambers of the Heart to receive more oxygen!
20
Vs.
21
Blood Vessels: Resemble a tree.
Main artery in the center is like the trunk. This main artery branches out into large arteries. This continue to branch off into smaller and smaller blood vessels.
23
Aorta: The main artery. Aorta = Tree trunk.
24
Which of the following is not one of the three types of blood vessels
Which of the following is not one of the three types of blood vessels? A – Veins B – Right Ventricle C – Capillaries D – Arteries
25
Arteries transport blood ____ the heart, while veins transport blood ____ the heart. A - Towards, Away from B – Away from, Towards C – In, Out of D – Towards, Towards
26
The main artery in the human body is called the – A – Capillary B – Right Chamber C – Vein D – Aorta
27
Which blood vessel is tiny and allows the blood to flow through the actual organs and tissues? A – Arteries B – Veins C – Capillaries D – Ventricles
28
Once the blood has flown through the organ/tissue, it is _____ in oxygen and returns back to the ______ atrium. A – High, Left B – High, Right C – Low, Left D – Low, Right
