1 Physical Properties of Rocks by Laure Bakker

2 Arizona Standards Grade Level: 3 Strand 6: Earth and Space Science
Concept 1: Properties of Earth Materials PO 3: Classify rocks based on the following physical properties: color texture

3 Warm-Up What do a rock and a chocolate chip cookie have in common?

4 Planet Earth is Just One Big Interesting Rock!
Geology is the science and study of the Earth Understand the Earth’s processes requires knowledge about rocks

5 What Is a Rock? A rock is a group of minerals bound together
Rocks are found in Earth’s crust and mantle. The rocks of the mantle are seldom seen at the surface and are largely similar. The crust, however, contains many different types of rocks. These rocks can be classified according to the processes by which they are formed.

6 Physical Properties Size Shape Color Texture Hardness

7 Classifying Rocks Origin: Where and how the rock is formed
Texture: Size, shape, and pattern of rock’s grains Grains: Particles of minerals or other rocks

8 Grain Size Fine, Medium, and coarse

9 Grain Shape Sand, seeds, jagged, rounded

10 Grain Pattern Flat layers, wavy, rows, random

11 No Visible Grain Smooth & Shiny

12 Types of Rocks Igneous: Forms from the cooling magma or lava.
Sedimentary: Forms when particles of minerals and/or rocks, animals, or plants are cemented together. Metamorphic: Formed when a rock is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.

13 Let’s Sing a Rock Song! Sing to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”
SEDIMENTARY rock Has been formed in layers Often found near water sources With fossils from decayers Then there's IGNEOUS rock Here since Earth was born Molten Lava, cooled and hardened That's how it is formed These two types of rocks Can also be transformed With pressure, heat and chemicals METAMORPHIC they'll become.
