The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People: Finding the Leader in Me!
Adapted from Stephen Covey’s: Seven Habits of Highly Effective People; Inspired by Stephen Covey’s The Leader in Me; Some interpretations are derived from Interpretation of Heather Sheehan
2
What is a Habit? A habit is something you automatically do over and over again. It becomes something that you don’t have to think about, you just do it. Good Habits Brushing your teeth Exercising Reading before bed Good hygiene Others?? Bad Habits Falling asleep on the couch Picking at scabs Talking back to adults Doing homework in the morning Others???
3
How do you develop or create a HABIT?
Some habits are developed on purpose, you choose to brush your teeth first thing when you wake up because you don’t want stink breath… Some habits are created by accident, you always brush your teeth with your right hand.
4
Can you change your HABITS?
YES WE CAN! Make the decision to do it! Is it easy to change HABITS? Not usually, but with DETERMINATION, you can do it. Creating new habits that are healthier and better for yourself and everyone around you can take hard work.
5
What does it mean to be effective?
An effective person will: Set goals for themselves and work hard to reach them. Create and maintain strong relationships with others. Work well with others in groups. Be happy and confident with themselves. Be respectful to themselves and others. Work hard to be able to do things well. Focus on PRIMARY GREATNESS
6
What is a Leader? Who Can be a Leader? Leaders make good choices.
Leaders plan. Leaders get along with others. Leaders use their talents and strengths to solve problems. Everyone has the power to be a leader – especially you!! Who Can be a Leader?
7
Primary Greatness vs Secondary Greatness
Primary Greatness is achieved by being a good, kind and thoughtful person. A person who is happy with themselves and treats everyone, including themselves with RESPECT. You achieve primary greatness by having INTEGRITY and good character. Secondary Greatness is achieved when you are recognized by others for your talents rather than your character. An example of secondary greatness is winning a trophy or getting straight A’s on your report card. Who here has Primary Greatness? The person who won the game and spoke poorly to the kids on the other team or the person who won the game and congratulated the other kids for a great game… The person who got an A+ but fools around in class or the person who got a C and tried their very best… The person who has 20 friends but will only play what she wants to play, or the person who is new to the school and helps someone after they fell at the playground…

Habit # 1 Be Proactive Means taking initiative and being responsible for your actions or reactions toward something. Initiative- is taking responsibility to make things happen. Proactive people believe that they CAN and WILL do something because, they realize they are in control of their choices. They bring their own weather with them. They control their reactions and choose to see the rainbow or the storm and are willing to face the consequences.
10
When something bad happens you choose what to say and how you will react…
REACTIVE LANGUAGE PROACTIVE LANGUAGE There is nothing I can do about it… That is just the way I am… He makes me mad… She won’t let me… I have to do that… I can’t… If only he… She made me… Let’s look at our choices I can choose how I respond I control my feelings I can create an excellent project I choose… I can… I will… YOU choose which language you use. YOU choose your reaction. YOU choose whether or not to be PROACTIVE!
11
EVERYONE makes mistooks, I mean mistakes…
It is what we do about it that matters… The greatest leaders of our time make mistakes. But, they are good leaders because they choose to be proactive by: Acknowledging the mistake immediately. “I made a mistake” Doing what ever it takes to fix it. “I am so sorry” Learn from it. “What can I do next time to make sure this doesn’t happen again”
12
Knowing what is in MY control
Things I can’t control… Me and My Actions and Choices Proactive People Focus on the things they can control: yourself and your actions…
13
What you can be VS What you could have
Integrity Proactive people keep promises to themselves and others. They don’t just say they will do something they DO IT! This builds trust in themselves and others. The sense of trust, pride and importance of knowing you can keep a promise is Integrity. What you can be VS What you could have Focus on what you can be not on the “but if I only had… “ Instead of saying “ If only I was better at math” say, “ I can be better at math if I practice my math facts every night and ask for help” Instead of wishing your sister was nicer say, “ I can be better to my sister by being nice and offering to help her with her chores. “ REMEMBER – You can only control YOU – so focus on what you can be and things will work more effectively around you.
14
Summary of Habit #1 Be Proactive
Proactive people… Know that they choose how to respond to things that happen in life. Never say they have to do something Bring their own weather with them and choose to shine light on a situation. Use Proactive language and not reactive. Focus on things that they can control. Make and keep promises to themselves and others. They have integrity. Acknowledge mistakes right away, correct them and learn from them. ALWAYS ask themselves: “How am I going to react?” Focus on what they can be and what they can do with what they have – not on what they could have. Are you a PROACTIVE person??

Habit #2 Begin with the end in mind
What do you want people to say about you when you are not around? How do you make sure that they can say that about you? What grade do you want to achieve in Math? How do you get it?
17
Setting Goals What do I want to be today?
What do I want to be in a week? What do I want to be in a Month? What do I want to be in a year? What do I want to be in 5 years? 10 years? 30 years? Start small and think BIG!
18
VISUALIZE Think of something that you want to happen See it happening
Now rewind it and picture all the things you had to do to prepare for it to happen Visualizing alone doesn’t make it happen, now you have to go out and put your vision to action.
19
Personal Mission Statement
Focus on what means most to you in life… Mission statements are usually a few sentences that describe the goals in your life. They remind people what their mission is Help people to focus on what is important to them so that everything they do is supported. Listen more than you talk. Taking care of myself makes me more effective in taking care of others. Laugh more than you cry…
20
Examples of Mission Statements
I want to continuously promote and foster a cooperative environment wherever I go. I want to make everyone feel welcome in my presence, and yet retain my strength and individuality. I will use my talents as a communicator to teach others. I will use my social skills to bring people closer together. I will be inspired by the smallest of challenges. I will live in awe of my good fortune in life. I will contribute to my family by offering support. I want to contribute to society through a charity organization. I will raise my children to embrace other cultures and not fear differences in people. I believe in treating others with kindness. I do not make excuses for myself. I will be humble and serve others. I will look for strengths in others, and the good in every situation. I will ensure that I do what I can to create a learning environment everywhere I go. I will live with and attitude of gratitude. I will repay every kindness shown to me. I will live, work, and play with renewed spirit. "always take responsibility," or "express my emotions constructively."

31
Think Win - Win To really think win-win you need 3 things: Integrity – valuing ourselves and know that we are important and if we say we will do something we DO IT! Maturity – we need to act in a grown up responsible way. Abundance Mentality – abundance means there is a lot of something. Mentality means the way you think. So the two together means that you believe that there is a lot of good things to share with everyone in this world.

Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood
Imagine going to the doctor and before you can even tell her what is wrong, she gives you a medicine that she says will make you feel better. Would you trust the doctor? Would you want to take the medicine? People Communicate in 4 main ways: Reading – Writing – Speaking - Listening
36
Listening How do you know you are a good listener?
Eyes are on the person talking. Put other thoughts aside. Avoid distractions. Ask questions to help you understand. Allow them to finish talking. Actively listen: Nod head Facial expressions Mmm Hmm, yes, I know, ok…
