8 Dahlonega Gold Rush Gold was discovered in the summer of 1829.
Cherokee knew there was gold in the hills, but Benjamin Parks was given credit for the discovery. Found while deer hunting. Tens of thousands came with gold pans, picks, and shovels. They were in Cherokee land.

9 Dahlonega Gold Rush GA legislature passed a law that place part of the Cherokee land under state control. The law declared the Indian laws null. White people could hurt or kill Indians without punishment. 1829 a law was passed that took the Cherokee’s right to the gold in Dahlonega. The Cherokees lost homes, lands, and legal rights.

10 Worchester V. Georgia Georgian’s didn’t care what happened to the Indians. White people couldn’t live on Indian Land without an allegiance to the governor. Reverend Worchester, Reverend Butler and the Cherokee capital of New Echota refused to sign. They were arrested, set free, then arrested again in 1831. Found guilty in the county court and took the case to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the court in Lawrenceville could not stand.

11 Worchester V. Georgia Cherokee thought they could keep their land.
The Cherokee Indian’s land was sold in land lotteries. Cherokees refused to leave their homes. On January 9, 1833 Worchester and fellow missionary gave up and abandoned litigation (legal court action). They were told they had to leave the state. Chief John Ross went many times to Washington to ask Congress for help. He wanted the treaties to be upheld but no help was given.
