DBs often grew independently resulting in little cross-ref. capability. Working to change that now. Internet access seen as enhancing citizenship – bridging dig. divide Informing the citizens quicker, but better? What does the blogosphere do to the influence on people? Political sides are more entrenched quicker and deeper. Security on networks vital (VPNs) both in gov. and business Technology has changed elections – radio, TV, internet, computer modeling, election result predictions (2000 – Bush v. Gore) Internet may increase young voter participation (2008 vs 2010 vs 2012) ITEC 102

3 Technology and War Theory of wars spurring technology development – largely due to funding. Computing major factor in numerous aspects of warfare – Code-breaking, flight, rockets, reporting, bombs, artillery, autonomous weapons, etc. Today’s wars involve increasingly greater numbers of remote controlled weapons – significant and not well understood ramifications More injuries but less deaths due to technological medical advances World-wide military-industrial complex larger today than ever ITEC 102
