Presentation on theme: "Rubric for IWA – On/Off-Topic Decision"— Presentation transcript:

Rubric for IWA – On/Off-Topic Decision
The paper must be related to a theme connecting at least two of the stimulus materials. The theme must be clear to the reader and not only accessible through a “tortured explanation.” If the paper is not connected to at least two of the sources then all rows receive a score of 0.

Rubric for IWA – Line 1 Does the stimulus material help progress the argument or contribute to the narrative? Good: The deletion of the reference would change or weaken the argument. The student has an accurate understanding of the source. Bad: Deletion has little effect on argument. Stimulus material is a jumping off point. The source is misinterpreted.

Rubric for IWA – Line 2 Does the paper provide a detailed explanation of why the research question matters? Good: Contains specific and relevant details (who, what, when, where) to convey importance. Alignment between research question and argument. Bad: Unsubstantiated assertions (this is important) Overly broad statements on context or statements on context that are not relevant.

Rubric for IWA – Line 3 Does the paper include multiple perspectives? Good: Yes AND makes comparisons among them by looking at limitations or weaknesses of various perspectives. Bad: Comparisons between perspectives are simplistic (agree or disagree). No comparisons between perspectives or only one perspective.

Rubric for IWA – Line 4 Is there an evidence based argument? Good: Clearly organized argument (signposting). Explain how evidence supports claims. Alternate views are explored. Sufficient detail to assess plausibility or argument. Bad: Organized argument or evidence supporting claims but not both. Lack of detail to support argument. Paper is information only (no argument)

Rubric for IWA – Line 5 Does the paper include relevant evidence from credible sources and sufficient evidence to support the argument? Good: Purposeful use of relevant evidence from a variety of sources (including peer reviewed and primary sources). Evidence supports claims and is connected to the argument. Bad: Many sources merely referenced, not drawn on in depth. Evidence doesn’t fully support claims (gaps). Scholarly sources used for simplistic ideas.

Rubric for IWA – Line 6 Are the citations accurate? Good: Bibliography is consistent in style without missing elements. Internal citations are accurate and match with bibliography. Bad: Missing internal citations or sources in bibliography. Unclear references, must guess from a url.

Rubric for IWA – Line 7 Is the grammar and style appropriate for an academic audience? Concerns: Grammar errors make reading difficult. Lapses into colloquial language.
