1 Density Lab

2 Problem: What is the density of some common substances?
Does the size of the substance affect the density?

3 Hypothesis Write an If… then… prediction for each of the problem statements.

4 Materials Triple Beam Balance Graduated Cylinder Calculator Samples
Lab Book

5 Procedure 1. Find the mass of each metal sample and record on the data table. 2. Find the volume of each metal sample and record on the data table. 3. Calculate the density for each metal sample and record it in the data table. (Hint: the density = mass / volume)

6 Data Table See data table in spreadsheet

7 Graph Graph the density vs sample. Graph in order of least density to most density.

8 Conclusion Make a statement about whether or not your hypothesis was correct. Include a brief statement about your results. Hint: You will need one for each of your hypotheses

9 Analysis In paragraph form, you need to address the following: Results
Problems Reference Graph Questions Does the order of the density from least to greatest make sense based on your prior knowledge? Why or why not? Given that the gravity on the moon is 1/6 of that on earth, would the mass and density change? Why or why not? Compare your density to the actual density of each sample. Highlight the densities that have an error factor of 0.8 or more. Why would you have this great of an error factor? Hint: Leaving out any of these parts will result in a significant grade reduction!
