Balance between endogenous glucocorticoid action (ie, anti-inflammatory) and pro-inflammatory responses. Although glucocorticoids can inhibit inflammatory responses, inflammatory responses can induce glucocorticoid release but also may resist the actions of glucocorticoids locally or systemically through a cytokine-dependent mechanism.
