1 The more you know Week 2: Knowing Self

2 Main point To become the person God wants me to be I must know myself.

3 Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.

4 Ephesians 4:20-24 But that is not how you came to know Christ, assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.

5 The journey of sanctification
Double Knowledge • Last week knowing God • This week knowing myself

6 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
John Calvin from beginning of Institutes of the Christian Religion: “Nearly all the wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves.”

7 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
Church father Augustine instructed us to pray with these words, “Therefore pray most briefly and perfectly, as much as thou canst. God, always the same, let me know myself, let me know Thee.”

8 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
The starting point is our salvation. The destination is being like Jesus. Knowledge of self is our current location in our sanctification journey Knowing yourself helps you know how far you are from your destination (Being like Jesus)

9 How People See us:

10 Who we Really are:

11 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
Knowing ourselves is knowing our heart Psalm 19: Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

12 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
Knowing ourselves is knowing our heart Psalm 139:23,24 - Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.

13 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
Knowing ourselves is knowing our heart Knowing ourselves is prayerfully take the time to stop, pray, listen and reflect on what is happening in our hearts. - Take stock of our emotions - Examine our motives - Think about our attitudes

14 The journey of SANCTIFICATION
Jeremiah 17:9 - The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?

15 The knowledge of God guides our response
Response 1: Minimize the Sin in our Heart - Because we compare ourselves to others - Answer: God is our point of comparison not other people (transcendence) “Be holy as I am holy”

16 The knowledge of God guides our response
Response 1: Minimize the Sin in our Heart “it is certain that man never achieves a clear knowledge of himself unless he has first looked upon God’s face, and then descends from contemplating him to scrutinize himself. For we always seem to ourselves righteous and upright and wise and holy—this pride is innate in all of us—unless by clear proofs we stand convinced of our own unrighteousness, foulness, folly, and impurity.” – John Calvin

17 The knowledge of God guides our response
Response 2: The Fear of Rejection - Because we focus on our imperfect love rather than God’s perfect love - Answer: God’s perfect love secures us (immanence) - “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord”

18 Journey towards transformation
The knowledge of self, corrected by knowledge of God, points us toward transformation. Becoming like Jesus.

19 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Matthew 15:18-20 – But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.

20 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Ephesians 4: But that is not how you came to know Christ, assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.

21 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Colossians 3:9-10 – Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.

22 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition • Subtraction - Taking off old self (mortification) • Addition - Putting on new self (vivification) • Mortification - putting sin to death

23 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Colossians 3:5-8 - Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, God’s wrath is coming upon the disobedient, and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.

24 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Romans 8: So then, brothers and sisters, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

25 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Hebrews 12:4 - In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

26 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Transformation dependent on God God changes us. We cannot change ourselves. Philippians 1:21 - Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.

27 Journey towards transformation
Transformation from the Inside Out Transformation by Subtraction and Addition Transformation dependent on God God changes us. We cannot change ourselves. Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

28 Journey towards transformation
We often are guilty of acting like this is who we are…

29 Journey towards transformation
But the reality is, this is who we really are…

30 Journey towards transformation
James 5:16 -Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. “To love is to be vulnerable” - C.S. Lewis

31 Know god and know yourself
You begin to change, you mess up, you change some more... Philippians 1:6 - I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
