1 What is a fragment? A fragment is an incomplete sentence.
It’s missing a subject, a verb, or is an incomplete thought. Remember: Subject: who is doing the action Verb: action or being word

2 Huh? Who is doing the action? Missing the subject!
A fragment is missing something. It can’t stand on its own. It’s not complete. Example: Catches her breath. Who is doing the action? Missing the subject! Example: Shanice, the girl from St. Pauls. What is she doing? Missing the verb!

3 What is a run-on? A run-on is two (or more) complete sentences squashed into one without the right punctuation. Hint: If you can draw a line between the two complete sentences, then you have a run-on!

4 Show me that trick! Mrs. Sullivan likes cupcakes she really just likes the cake. Is it complete on either side of the line? Mrs. Sullivan likes cupcakes. She really just likes the cake. Run-on!

5 So…how do you fix run-ons?
I like rice it is good. Two periods. Just separate them into two sentences. I like rice. It is good.

6 So…how do you fix run-ons?
I like steak it is expensive. Comma + FANBOYS. Add a comma and one of the FANBOYS words. I like steak, but it is expensive.

7 So…how do you fix run-ons?
I like rice it is good. Semicolon. Just put in a semicolon ; between the two sentences. I like rice; it is good.

8 FANBOYS For And Nor But Or Yet So

9 Tips A comma is not strong enough to fix a run-on. It has to have a FANBOYS word to fix it. When using a semicolon, don’t capitalize anything. Just drop it in and move on!
