Shakespeare & Duels – Act III, Scene 1
The weapon used most often for duels in Shakespeare’s time was the rapier and it’s sharp end frequently meant a fatal outcome in duels. Elizabethans believed that justice could be determined by the outcome of a duel and that rejecting a challenge to a duel was shameful. Tybalt’s challenge in Act III, Scene 1 addresses the wrong he felt took place when the Montague’s crashed the Capulet party. By rejecting the challenge, Romeo shames his family and friends – a fact that helps to explain why Mercutio responds to Tybalt’s challenge – Mercutio is fighting for Romeo’s honor.
