Early races of North America
The Dutch brought the first Africans to America. In 1619, 32 Africans lived in Jamestown Early blacks were free, especially if baptized. The English called them “negroes” (Spanish for black) Europeans at first enslaved Native Americans, but when disease kills many they begin enslaving Africans

Native Americans Many had organized societies and lived harmoniously with their environment Some tribes provided refuge to escaping slaves and some saw extensive racial mixing Natives taught other how to cultivate corn, pumpkins, tobacco, & potatoes miscegenation – interracial contact that produced people of mixed race
