1 Objectives & “I Can” Objectives:
W.8.1 Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Introduce claims, acknowledge and distinguish the claims from alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically. W.8.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. W.8.5 With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. “I Can” Statements W.8.1: I can take NOTES from the research I gathered to identify evidence that supports my reasons. W.8.1, W.8.4, W.8.5: I can complete an organized OUTLINE that clearly cites evidence that supports my stance and acknowledges the opposing side.

3 Monday, May 20, 2013 JOURNAL: Optional Free Write Grab your persuasive essay folder from the front basket and work on (in order): 1. TAKE NOTES from research (three articles). 2. Fill in OUTLINE (cite sources). 3. Start writing ROUGH DRAFT. Rough Draft due FRIDAY.

9 Lotteries should be outlawed. Reason #1: They’re a waste of money.
1. Introduction Hook (question, quote, etc.) Question: “What are the odds…?” Better than winning the lottery it turns out. b. Intro Topic & Give Background (if needed) Lottery – many different ways to play, played in all fifty states, played by an estimated 2 million Americans each week. C. Statement (states writer’s stance/side) Lotteries should be outlawed. d. Three reasons for stance Reason #1: They’re a waste of money. Reason #2: Damaging to health of winners & losers. Reason #3: Don’t actually help public schools.

Economics Professor and lottery expert, Dr. Robert Goodman, says that after 3 to 5 years, many people stop playing the lottery because they can no longer afford it (“The Luck Business”).
