Peter’s Denial Luke 22:54-62
8
A Predictable Betrayal
Jesus saw this coming Matthew 26:34-35 Peter’s personality may have led to this Matthew 16:21-23 Mt 26:34 Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." 35 Peter *said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too. Mt 16:21 ¶ From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."

Following At A Distance
Why follow at a distance? FEAR of the opinion of people Dangers of following Jesus at a distance Easy to think we are invisible Ro 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
10
Hard Pressed to Back Out
Peter’s repeated denial of Christ With his word, with an oath, with a curse Once in denial we don’t want to back out Hebrews 6:4-6 According to Matthew, Peter escalated his denial each time Heb 6:4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
11
God Kept Warning Peter But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he went out onto the porch, and a rooster crowed. …..Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." Mark 14:68,72
12
God Kept Warning Peter Peter was warned: Beforehand by Jesus By the first rooster’s crow God warns us By the Scriptures – Hebrews 12:25 By the consequences of sin – James 3:13 Heb 12:25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. Jas 3:13 ¶ Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.
13
Jesus Saw It All The Lord turned and looked at Peter…. Luke 22:61 There are no “secret sins” Jeremiah 17:10 Revelation 2:23 Jer 17:10 "I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds. Re 2:23 'And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.
14
Peter’s Restoration Jesus predicted Peter’s restoration Luke 22:31-32 It was still a hard event John 21:15-19 Restoration is hard to do 2 Corinthians 2:5-7 Lu 22:31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.“ 2Co 2:5 ¶ But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree--in order not to say too much--to all of you. 6 Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, 7 so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
