1 “Exploring the material world”
Teaching kit “Exploring the material world” Educational activities for Roma children and families

2 Clear water… The different aspects of the discovery of the material world can only be approached from real-life situations and observation satisfying children’s curiosity.

3 Activity 8: Clean water is transparent…
This activity can be performed without supervision. The mediator will begin by presenting the relevant activity sheet.. An activity not requiring supervision is one that can be started and carried out without the mediator being present. The activity can be performed by one or more children, with or without the family’s help.

4 Exploring the material world – drinking water Sheet n° 8
Activity 8 : Drinking water... Clear water or drinking water ?

5 Clear water or drinking water ?
Question 1 : - Tell me what you can see on the sheet. Sheet n° 8 Clear water or drinking water ?

6 Clear water or drinking water ?
Sheet n° 8 Water served in a glass is good to drink! … (while showing the glass and its contents). Clear water or drinking water ?

7 Clear water or drinking water ?
Question 1 : - Dis-moi ce que tu vois sur la fiche ! L’exploration du monde de la matière – l’eau potable Sheet n° 8 Water served in a glass is good to drink! … (while showing the glass and its contents). Activité 8 : L’eau potable... Drinking water is water we can drink without danger to our health. Clear water or drinking water ?

8 Activité 8 : L’eau potable...
Question 1 : - Dis-moi ce que tu vois sur la fiche ! L’exploration du monde de la matière – l’eau potable Sheet n° 8 - Water served in a glass is good to drink! … (while showing the glass and its contents). Activité 8 : L’eau potable... Drinking water is water we can drink without danger to our health. Drinking water does not contain any micro-organisms or dangerous chemicals. Drinking water is clear and unpolluted

9 At nursery school, the important thing is that children should identify and name what they see.

10 Questions to ask the child:
Q 2: When we find clear water, do you think we can drink it? NB: Clear water is not always good to drink. It is important not to confuse clear water and drinking water.

11 Together we are going to read the other side of the activity sheet :
Exploring the material world – drinking water Sheet n° 8 How to obtain drinking water Together we are going to read the other side of the activity sheet :

12 Water treated using sunlight
Exploring the material world – drinking water Sheet n° 8 Describe these pictures… How to obtain drinking water Water treated using sunlight Boiled water Rainwater Nous allons lire ensemble le verso de la fiche

13 Observation and description are a unique resource for verbal expression and interaction, even for the youngest and most reserved children.

14 Suggestion for an unsupervised activity
To obtain drinking water, I would suggest trying out a few experiments:

15 Suggestion for an unsupervised activity
In rainy weather, put a clean receptacle outside to collect rainwater. To obtain drinking water, I would suggest trying out a few experiments: To obtain drinking water, you can collect rainwater. It is safe to drink: it does not contain any micro-organisms or any toxic chemicals.

16 They will be able to illustrate what they have learnt at each stage with drawings, notes and photos.
(these notes and observations can sometimes be made with the mediator and sometimes independently)

17 All these experiments are aids to discussion and to attempts at representation (through drawing or photography), which are themselves new subjects of discussion.

18 Another activity for obtaining drinking water
You can also obtain drinking water by boiling clear water.

19 Another activity for obtaining drinking water
For it to be good to drink, you have to let it cool down. Boiled water is water that is fit for drinking. It can safely be drunk and does not contain any micro-organisms or toxic chemicals.

20 Make a notebook with the children.
children will be able to note down what they do and the stages to obtain drinking water.

21 Observing things, formulating theories, trying things out and conducting experiments are a unique resource for verbal expression and interaction.

22 Activity 3 – Obtaining drinking water
You can also obtain drinking water by treating clear water with sunlight.

23 Activity 3 – Obtaining drinking water
Next time we will do this activity together. Solar-treated water is fit for drinking. It is safe to drink and does not contain any micro-organisms or toxic chemicals.

24 The written recording of observations (dictated to an adult) helps to memorise knowledge, become aware of relationships in space and time and identify causal links.

25 In the course of these exchanges with the adult, an orderly pattern of questioning, clear concepts and, ultimately, knowledge will take shape.

26 the child should be able to…
distinguish between clear water and drinking water ; formulate theories and test them ; conduct simple experiments to obtain drinking water. On completion of the activity the child should be able to…
