1 Macbeth Learning Objective Read and understand Act 5 Scene 1
Understand how to write a PEELink to the wider play.

2 Starter What is OCD? This scene is filled with unnatural and disturbed behaviour, so it is appropriate that Shakespeare wrote it in prose rather than verse (where else has this happened in the play). The language is uneven and lacking in the rich fluency of poetry As you read, think about why Shakespeare has crafted this scene in this way.

3 Read Read Act 5 Scene 1

4 Read How does this scene change your perceptions of Lady Macbeth? How could you write about this in your PEE that Links to the rest of the play (PEEL)? Add a post-it note (or two or three) that you could use after today’s reading.

5 Now try writing your own.
Remember this… By Act 3 she has already been pushed aside by her husband, who tells her to be ‘innocent of the knowledge’ of Banquo’s murder rather than his ‘partner in greatness’. Her power in her relationship has started to disappear. She is finally tormented so much by the murder of Duncan that she goes mad and kills herself. Perhaps Shakespeare is suggesting that Lady Macbeth is powerful in some ways but not others; she is determined and strong when she needs to be, but also feels that she has to completely get rid of her femaleness in order to be able to be strong in a man’s world. Now try writing your own.

6 Plenary Read through and check own work for issues and SPaG.

7 Homework Must: Finish this part of the practice assessment
Should: Ask someone to read through and check your work for you. Could: Complete another link paragraph.
