Fill in the gaps You are responsible for writing your own introductions, transitions, and conclusions These sections should be in “plain” text Acknowledge the 3 texts you are using at some point in your address Typically in Introduction, but it also may be effective for you to do so in transitions. Make the selected texts the focal points of your presentation.

With: the voice and the body Think about intentionality when plotting your performance Be immersive but also technically sound Helps with interpretation and general comprehension

The Performance Be mindful of your speaking rate Account for nerves
Elevated rate often results in poor pronunciation and enunciation of terms. RECOMMENDATION: Use pauses to your advantage.

The Performance Establish eye contact with audience members
“Varied and sustained” Rehearse eye contact behaviors when practicing your performance Avoid “darted” behaviors

The Performance Be mindful of what your body is doing!
Avoid swaying, crossed legs, and other erratic behaviors as best you can. If you choose to include movement, make it planned and deliberate.

The Performance Include gestures
Note cards are recommended to promote gestures Gestures should not be over-the-top, but also not so subtle as to look erratic or accidental. Keep gestures in the appropriate “position.”

The Performance Vocalizations
Do your best to avoid monotone vocal qualities. Practice different inflections and vocalizations when rehearsing your interpretation. Aim for “vocal variety.”
