Light S4P1: Students will investigate the nature of light using tools such as mirrors, lenses, and prisms.
2
Essential Question: What are the characteristics of light and how does it normally behave?
3
Light: a form of energy that you can see
Vocabulary Light: a form of energy that you can see Opaque: Not allowing light to pass through Shadow: an area where light does not strike the ground
4
More Vocabulary: Translucent: allows only some light to pass through Transparent: lets light pass through
5
What is light? Light is a form of energy that you can see.
Energy is the ability to cause change. We can see objects because of light. Light energy moves in waves and travels in straight lines from its source.
6
Essential Question How is light reflected?
7
Reflection When light hits a smooth, shiny object it reflects or bounces off of it.
8
Refraction Essential Question: How is light refracted?
9
Refraction Refraction is the slowing down and bending of light
10
Lenses in cameras and your eye help you to see objects using refraction
11
Review: Mirrors and other smooth surfaces _______ all the light that strikes them. Light can _____ or bend, when it passes through air, water, and glass. The ____ in your eyes _____ light to form an image in your retina and your brain interprets that image.
12
Light Review ____ occurs when light bounces off of an object
_____ occurs when light is bent When light strikes a surface that is rough, the light will _____ When light strikes a surface that is smooth, the light will bounce off at equal _____
13
Lens Lenses are a ______ type of material.
The path of light that a ______ lens follows is directed toward a single focal point. _____ lenses help me to see objects far away.
14
What is Color? When light strikes an object, the color of the light affects the way the object is seen.
15
Prism Sun light is white light that is really a collection of light wave of different colors. A prism is a piece of glass that separates white light into colors.
16
Color A colored object absorbs some colors of light but reflects other colors. Bananas look yellow because they reflect yellow light. They absorb all the other colors.
