IQE and development of Europe’s first compound semiconductor cluster CS Connected Cluster offers full foundry capability from early stage research through to commercialisation >£300M investment BBC, Creative Cardiff & ‘Clwster Creadigol’ investment Creative Cardiff established by University to support creative industries in region, works closely with BBC and its partners Clwstwr Creadigol: unprecedented £10m investment into the creative economy by UK government IQE and CS Connected Establishment of Compound Semiconductor Centre – joint Venture between University & IQE Development of Compound Semiconductor Cluster attracted >£250m investment from local and national Government, UKRI, Europe and industry Works with industry partners like IQE, Airbus, General Dynamics and GE Healthcare to deliver world-leading research with transformational applications in big data, cyber-security, communications, IoT, AI, automotive vehicles, 3D imaging, aerospace, energy efficiency, power control, safety, security, space applications and satellite systems Further £51.3M investment in August 2018 by UK Government BBC, Creative Cardiff & ‘Clwster Creadigol’ investment Long standing relationship developed through School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC), extends across University to include: Co-locating JOMEC with new headquarters of BBC Cymru Wales Training BBC journalism internships and postgraduate training Executive Education programmes Collaborative research and much more… Clwstwr Creadigol Cardiff University led AHRC project to support R&D in screen industries Includes 3 Universities, all major Welsh broadcasters, Welsh Government and over 60 screen industry businesses

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education
Students are at the heart of innovation strategy: Emphasis on 21st century skills Encouraging entrepreneurship as a legitimate career path Student Enhancing Education Scheme (SEEd) Innovation activity embedded in the curriculum Student Enterprise & Start up – Partnered with Welsh Government on their Youth Entrepreneurship strategy Innovation for All Programme 21st century skills complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity etc SEEd students work directly with academic and professional services staff on learning and teaching enhancement projects to shape the student experience Activity embedded in cirriculum E.g. Biotechnology and Business module engages students with entrepreneurship and the business concepts of Biotechnology; Commercialising innovation as part of the Physics and Engineering undergraduate programmes etc Student Enterprise & Start up Awareness raising activity, Inspirational speakers, Mentoring, Interactive skills workshops, start-up workshops, Awards and funding, Social enterprise collaboration with ENACTUS, Test trading etc. Innovation for All Programme Provide opportunities for all our students to engage with research and engagement activities – enhancing entrepreneurial, innovative and creative thinking skills. Support and encourage interdisciplinary working – network development and confident learning Foster an academic culture that values, supports and facilitates the meaningful and purposive integration of teaching and research for the benefit of both students and staff. Phytoponics A revolutionary hydroponic growing system for agriculture Student Entrepreneur of the Year at The Entrepreneur Wales Awards 2016 UN’s inaugural Young Champion of the Earth prize ALPACR A new social-networking platform for young people travelling and adventuring Won the Virgin Voom competition in 2017 Phytoponics Developed by engineering student Adam Dixon Took a novel low-cost hydroponics system to market Phytoponics received funding from Cardiff University through our Start-up Awards as well as mentoring support Founder, Adam Dixon won the UN’s inaugural Young Champion of the Earth prize for his innovation to tackle food insecurity and habitat loss. In 2018 Phytoponics raised an additional £300,000 in funding through existing shareholders and new Angel investors. Company valued at >£2M and continuing to go from strength to strength ALPACR developed by Dan Swygart with help and support of University Founder, Dan Swygart received funding, mentoring and office space from Cardiff University’s Enterprise & Start-up Team. Dan won the Virgin Voom competition in 2017 and received a mentoring session from Sir Richard Branson. “The Enterprise and Start-up team helped improve my pitch deck, and advised on moving the idea further. They also offered free office space for one year, which helped massively in moving us forward. We have also been entered and won multiple prizes within the events and competitions held by the Enterprise and Start-up, which has helped tremendously.” Dan Swygart
