5 About AD 600, a Yamato prince name Shotoku ruled Japan on behalf of his aunt. He wanted to give Japan a strong, well-organized government, so Shotoku created a constitution, or a plan of a government. Specific rules in the constitution, based on the ideas of Confucius, stated how they should perform their duties. People who follow the teaching of Confucius are said to follow Confucianism. Japan

6 Shotoku admired Chinese civilization and wanted the Japanese to learn from it.
He had his officials and students to study Buddhism, as well as Chinese art, philosophy, the Chinese system of writing, and medicine. Japan continued…

7 Japan influenced by Confucianism
When discussing Confucianism's influence in Japan, it's important to understand that Confucianism places strong importance on human relationships. Unlike most Western religions, Confucianism does not teach the worship of any particular deity. Instead, it focuses more on human behavior, causing many scholars to consider it a code of conduct rather than a religion. Japan influenced by Confucianism

8 Japan influenced by Confucianism
A person practicing Confucianism will seek to act honorably in all his relationships. This is especially important in what Confucianism calls the Five Key Relationships, which are: the relationship of ruler to subject, father to son, husband to wife, elder to younger, and friend to friend. This emphasis on relationships has had a huge impact on the cultures of Korea and Japan. However, as is usually the case with religion and culture, each country has sort of put their own spin on this ancient faith. Japan influenced by Confucianism

9 Japan Influenced by Confucianism
The most important of these is the deep respect of one's elders. Confucianism is a system of family governance in which the elderly outrank the young. Japanese Confucianism also places a very high value on relationships. However, where Korean Confucianism seems to place the highest importance on family ties, Japanese Confucianism has historically emphasized the ruler-to-subject relationship.
