9 Paul vs. Barnabas Acts 15:37-38, 13:13 Mark was not dependable
- Serious nature of Gospel preaching - Dangerous to abandon brothers Mark did not take the Gospel seriously - Was not committed to Christ - Was not prepared to make sacrifices

10 Jesus Warned of Quitting
"But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.”  Matthew 13:20-21  In the parable of the soils, Jesus warned us about quitters

11 Jesus Warned of Quitting
"These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they stumble.”  Mark 4:16-17

12 Jesus Warned of Quitting
"But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.” Luke 8:13

13 Jesus Warned of Quitting
According to Jesus: About 1/3 of believers will quit When it is not easy to be a Christian - To stand firm against temptation - To keep doing what is expected of us - To be different from the world

14 Jesus Warns Quitters Don’t start unless you are serious Luke 14:26-33 If you quit, you are in a great danger Matthew 12:43-45  Mt 12:43 "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 "Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 "Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.“ Heb 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

15 His Disciples Warn Quitters
Falling away is worse than never obeying Hebrews 10: Peter 2:20-21 Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. Heb 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 2Pe 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

16 Quitting Create Problems
We struggle to encourage perseverance But some still quit They feel that they cannot overcome They become offended or discouraged They don’t realize the problems created

17 Quitting Create Problems
For Christ - Hebrews 6:4-6 For the church – 2 Timothy 4:9-10 Heb 6:4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 2Ti 4:9 Make every effort to come to me soon; 10 for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

18 Quitting Create Problems
No one “quits” the church without “quitting” Christ!

19 How to Avoid Quitting Before committing to Christ, count the cost! You can’t “quit if it doesn’t work out” The Way of Christ has no trial period The trade is ALL of you for ALL of Him How do you count the cost before

20 How to Avoid Quitting Before committing to Christ, count the cost! Know that there will be hard times But you can overcome them 1 Corinthians 10:13 1Co 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

21 How to Avoid Quitting Before committing to Christ, count the cost! Know that there will be hard times You can always turn around Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service. 2 Timothy 4:11 1Co 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
