System Administration (LTAT.06.003)
Exam
2
Exam times There are two sorts of times available – slots with 15 people, and 33 people. The 15 people ones are for those who are looking to graduate this year. Others please do not register there. Those who are not graduating this year, register to the 33 people one. If necessary, we will also put an exam to a date in June. But this will only be for people doing the second try. You will have to have completed your labs 7 days BEFORE your first registered exam date.
3
How exam will take place
There will be a new project in minu.etais.ee, that everyone can access. The project will have a new ”flavour” for VM’s, which is what you will have to use. This flavour will have a broken VM inside, and your job will be to start it up, and configure it to specifications given to you.
4
Exam structure and grading
There will be tasks for multiple topics, but not all of them. About ~4-5 topics per exam. Configuring DNS is a minimal requirement to pass the exam, because you can not get other services to respond without DNS. After DNS, you’re free to do whichever tasks you want, in random order. The exam will also have a grading server, but the final grade is given by the instructor, to give you a possibility to dispute the grades.
5
Requirements You can use either: The class computer Your laptop
In case of using your laptop, you have to have a working VPN installation. During the exam, you can use lab materials, your notes and the internet. You will not be allowed to talk to anyone, directly or by other means. We will monitor the internet traffic during the exams if we can see any traffic from sites/apps meant for this, you are instantly disqualified from that attempt
6
Expectations We will not ask you to do anything new
The topics will be the same: Linux basics Setting up the OS/file systems FS encryption DNS | SMTP and IMAP Apache NFS | Samba | Quotas LDAP But with a twist.. This time you are not responsible for setting these up, but fixing broken setups.
7
Examples Some things but not limited by that we can break and then ask you to fix: Have misconfigured the zones files Change the bind9 settings so resolvers are broken Missing configuration files, paths, permissions, ownerships Making services not boot up properly Missing pieces for the configured services (e.g. missing mysql for nextcloud) We will try to make it so that everything that fails, fails so that a reason is given in the log files.
8
Necessary skills You will need to use basic linux commands like cp, mv, nano, cat, grep, netstat. You need to know how to start, stop and manage services with systemctl. You need to be able to check log files with tail/cat+grep and/or journalctl. For DNS, different options of querying + debugging your installation are required e.g. nslookup, dig, ping, host, named-checkconf, named-checkzone For Apache, how to look at the website you’re trying to configure. (You can also use your computer for that, but you need to be able to configure it properly) Nmap, doveconf and sendmail are helpful for mail.
