1
Argument Diagrams to strip an argument down to its bare bones
to reconstruct & reveal its formal structure to highlight where an argument can be criticised linked, convergent & chain arguments
2
Linked Arguments I am taller than you. After all, Peter is taller than Imran and Imran is taller than you. So, the fact that I am taller than Peter means I must be taller than you.
3
Convergent Arguments Murdo is a good student. He studies hard, he always participates in class discussions, and he comes in to ask for help whenever he is stuck.
4
Chain Arguments Politicians should not be trusted because they lie all the time. I know this because every time I see them on TV, they say something that just isn’t true.
5
The Process Circle any premise or conclusion indicator words
Put brackets around each separate statement in the argument Number the statements. Statements that appear twice in the argument must use the same number Use the numbers to diagram how the premises support the conclusion by joining these numbers together with arrows
6
Mixed Activity Craig can’t be home because all the lights are out, there is a pile of unopened mail behind his letterbox and there are two weeks worth of milk deliveries on his doormat. No one leave the lights out when they are at home

I am a generous person. I gave my clothes to the Salvation Army
I am a generous person! I gave my clothes to the Salvation Army. I also gave my watch to the PDSA and I gave my last fiver to the orphanage appeal fund.
