Research Design challenge: How might we help OPDE kids, specifically P6 and S3 students, better prepare for their national exams? What should we focus on and how will we deliver it? P6 national exams determine which boarding school the students attend for their secondary school education. S3 national exams determine the curriculum track for S4 to S6. S6 national exams determine university placement. Sabrina

Interviews with Staff Staff
Questions asked were about how the students normally study and how much the staff was involved with their studying Learned more about the background about each exam Need 85% or above to pass Can’t take home textbooks Exams are all in English There is study time given everyday Have a culture of helping each other Maddy Fahey Interviewed Stella (social worker), Africa (social worker), and Jean Baptist (psychologist who lives with boys at OPDE)

Interviews with Students
Feedback You go to boarding school so you have a closer relationship with the teachers because they have more access to them. Boarding schools are better quality education. English was difficult They understood the concepts in subjects such as Science, but the questions being written in english made it difficult for them to understand. Lack of resources Only way they studied was with notes or textbooks (which they cannot take home) They had to keep the books in the library and sometimes they could not get the books they needed or they had to share them with many students. Believe review questions and old exams would be helpful for their studies Asked for “quizzes and sample questions with answers provided to check work” Madi

Themes and Insights P6 Studying Resources Knowledge of English S3
Access Motivation Morgan - P6→ whoever ever is presenting, pick one insight for each theme and how might we question for each 1) Insight: There is a barrier of time with the kids having chores but OPDE also encourages/requires the kids to study in order to stay at their facility. a. How might we create study tools that are time efficient, yet comprehensive and engaging? 2) Insight: Kids want more paper and more practice tests. a. How might we create an accessible resource that includes practice tests? 3) Insight: exams are in english and most teachers do not have the capability to teach in english a. How might we incorporate English composition outside the classroom? S3 Nicole Insight: The fact that students cannot take their study materials home from school often prevents students from efficiently studying outside of school. How might we provide students at OPDE with resources to study outside of school? Insight: The students have a desire to perpare for their national exams but barriers often prevent them from efficiently doing so. How might we improve OPDE students

Brainstorming P6 We wanted to create scheduled time to complete our review We wanted activities and practice questions for review material we selected Something that could be done in a small amount of time in any location After brainstorming, we decided on making Material review and Practice Exams. S3 The students were having a hard time passing their national exams. We wrote down a bunch of ways we thought would help the students be more successful. We narrowed our ideas down into a few manageable and feasible options. We finally selected to supply syllabi and practice exams to the students; printing them out and laminating them so they could be used down the line. S3 Brandon P6 - Maddy Fahey

P6 Storyboard Our story board included feedback from OPDE staff letting us know that it would be more beneficial to move our study guide schedule from 3 to 5 months and to lengthen the daily lesson from 10 minutes each to about 30 minutes. Farrell

S3 Storyboard Our storyboard included feedback from OPDE
staff and S3 students letting us know that they loved our idea & thought it would be very helpful. Mary Kate During Holiday, they are kept in JP office Only S3 students received study guides - 7 were given Planning on telling them to use notebooks instead of writing on pages

P6 Material Review Product
Through interviews, we learned that P6 exams consist of materials from P1-P6. Because of this, we decided to condense P1-P3 material since this information should have been built upon, and then we did full sections of P4-P6 since this information is newer and more difficult. Topics were chosen after looking at Rwandan curriculum maps and picking out important or more difficult lessons. Focused on English because after the interviews, that was the area they needed the most help in considering the exam is in all English. Lessons consisted of review of the topic and an activity to reinforce the material reviewed. Created a suggested schedule for 5 months before the exam Anna and Charlotte

Future Have people next year and in following years to check to see if the kids are benefitting from our products and then modify the things that aren’t working For current students to be able to contribute our first hand observations and ideas about work booklets provided by the linking lives club in order to ensure the projects sustainability More opportunities for students to speak with Polycarp and OPDE staff directly about needs and wants of OPDE For future students and OPDE staff to provide more information to the students about HCD projects so that students will be familiar with the purpose and intention of interviews before they take place. Future Heather Review page 10 PDF I ed you It is a PDF of the project Brinberg discussed yesterday, He said to be familiar with it for questions.
